As an application-oriented university of foreign studies that offers undergraduate programs, Hebei International Studies University (HISU) adopts the educational approaches of "major + foreign language" and "foreign language + major". It relies upon itself to finance courses on 75 languages with RMB 32 million every year. These courses are free of charge for students. In the last three years, the University has introduced 221 foreign experts, 19 specialists on the Belt and Road countries language talents training programs, and 93 foreign experts on non-universal languages from the Belt and Road countries.

These foreign experts take the initiative to serve as international cooperation specialists for HISU, bringing advanced education, teaching, management concepts and high-quality educational resources to the University. They are helping the University to reach high-level international standards and contributing to the internationalization of the City of Shijiazhuang.

Professor Kim Sik Kyung, winner of the “Hebei Friendship Award”

Doctor Kim Sik Kyung, Korean, Dean of School of Oriental Languages, HISU in charge of teaching, Vice President of HISU·Belt and Road Countries Economic, Cultural and Social Affairs Institute, Director of Center for Northeast Asian Studies, winner of Korea Education Minister Award and Hebei Friendship Award, dedicated to the study of Korean language teaching and literature, has teaching experience of over 30 years. He has published ten-plus articles and poems on Korean newspaper Qing Nan Dao Min News, over 20 poems on Open Poetics Annual Collection, a Korean poem collection, and six monographs including University Administration Practices and Foreign Languages HAND BOOK and Studies on University Administrative Performance Evaluation System Development.

On his classes, Professor Kim actively practices the “natural learning of languages”, which is an innovation by our university, so that students learn Korean the same way as their mother tongue. Beyond the classroom, he often has lunch together with his students and takes them to supermarkets, parks and shopping malls for language practice after classes or during weekends. As a scholarly and rigorous professor who loves Hebei and HFSU and believes in Education without Borders, Doctor Kim is popular among faculties and students of the University.

Thị Mai Phương, regarding HISU as her second home

Thị Mai Phương, Vietnamese, teaches the Vietnamese language at School of International Languages Education of HFSU. She called HISU a second home for foreign teachers. During the Covid-19 outbreak, she actively participated in the fundraising event organized by students from Vietnam, mobilizing Vietnamese students studying Chinese language here to donate 50000 disposable facial masks before sending them to Yunnan Province.

She speaks Chinese fluently and is able to shift between Vietnamese and Chinese in class. This makes her teaching more understandable to students while inspiring them to study hard. She also encourages students to listen to Vietnamese songs and watch Vietnamese films as a way to sparkle their interests in the language and learn more words.

Aytan, teaching before dawn despite the pandemic

Aytan, Azerbaijani teacher of School of Communication, HISU. The geographical distance between China and Azerbaijan creates a time difference of four hours, so Aytan starts teaching in the early morning and never misses any class.

Su taining, a master of eight languages, teaching Finnish and English languages in our university

Su taining graduated from University of Helsinki, a famous university of Finland. He masters eight languages and is also very fluent in Chinese. Attracted by the Chinese culture and its charm, he travelled a long distance to HISU and has since been teaching Finnish and English here, making an enormous contribution to disciplinary construction of our university. Through interactions with local teachers and students, he feels a strong connection with China. He often explains geography, customs and essential features of the Finnish culture to students. With an understanding of the background, they find it easy to learn the language.

Su Lei, a teacher of Spanish language who moved to HISU with the entire family

Su Lei is teaching Spanish in the School of Communication of HISU. Three years ago, she followed her husband, academician Pérez, to teach in our University. When interviewed by the Xinhua News Agency, she suggested: “The Chinese speed in responding to the Covid-19 and the solidarity demonstrated by the Chinese people are both impressive and moving!” What touched her most, she added, was the unity of the Chinese nation in the face of difficulty and the selfless sacrifice by medical workers and community volunteers.

It’s these lovely foreign experts as well as their selfless service and dedication that have produced so many “translators” who have graduated from HISU and explored their future abroad. Do you want such lovely and devoted foreign teachers? Do not hesitate to join us! 221 foreign experts and nine foreign academicians are waiting for you at HISU.
