In September 2018, during the military training for freshmen at Hebei Foreign Studies University, a new student had no difficulty in communicating with foreign teachers in Japanese. After understanding, this student has not learned Japanese, do not know, let alone can not write Japanese.
In October 2018, Academician Sun Jianzhong, Chairman of the Board and President of the school, personally met the student and witnessed his fluent dialogue with the master teachers who had been studying in Japan for many years. In a cordial conversation with Principal Sun, he said that he came to Hewai because of his love for anime and Japanese, and he wanted to be a translator in the future.
After more than two years of Japanese major learning, starting from 50 phonogram, he successfully passed N1 in the International Japanese Language Proficiency Test in December 2020 (the test has five levels, N1 being the highest level).
He is Hu Haifei, from Class 2, Grade 2018, School of Japanese, Hebei Foreign Studies University.
Hu Haifei was born in an ordinary family in Qinhuangdao City in September 1999. When he was a child, his mother often sang some Japanese songs for him. Although he could not understand them, they made him have a certain liking for the pronunciation and rhythm of this foreign language. When he was in third grade, a copy of One Piece became the key to unlocking his fascination with Japanese. At the age of 10, he used his spare time to finish more than 300 episodes of anime within half a year. Perhaps, this is the power of interest.
Fragmentation - Interest is powerful
Hu Haifei said that he is a fan of Japanese ACG culture and has been fond of Japanese manga since he was a child. In order to keep abreast of the latest anime stories, he often went to Japanese exchange forums to post and reply by himself. In the process, he mastered a lot of popular Internet culture and Internet language. In addition, he spends a lot of his free time looking for games that are not translated into Chinese, such as Neal Machine Age, that he is interested in, and translating them himself to play.
"During this process, my vocabulary gradually deepened and broadened, and there was my own time for entertainment and recreation, so I could seamlessly integrate into my new round of professional study." Making good use of games, instead of indulging in them, made his Japanese learning more effective with less effort.
"Professional Training Classroom" -- change "passive" learning into "seeking" learning
Before he chose his university major, Japanese was just a hobby. Because of this, he still does not recognize a few pseudonyms for the systematic basic learning of Japanese.
"Even then, I was able to understand most everyday conversations in Japanese by listening, based on years of experience, but it was an imitation. It was like a child learning to speak. You could understand and speak clearly, but you couldn't write or read." Hu Haifei said, "It was my university and my teacher that really showed me the way to learn Japanese. Since the systematic learning of Japanese, I can feel the smooth sailing, very comfortable. This can not be achieved without the careful teaching of teachers and the new classroom model of Hewai."

The "Professional Training Classroom" model and the natural language learning method proposed by Hewai creatively advocates returning the classroom to students, abandoning the cramming teaching method and breaking the traditional foreign language teaching method of word grammar and sentence structure, and creating an all-foreign language learning environment so that students can master foreign language naturally.
As for grammar learning in Japanese, Hu Haifei agrees with the professional teacher's point of view that "remember it when learning Japanese and forget it when speaking Japanese". Based on his own experience, he believes that grammar is like the skeleton of a language, which is very important, but in essence it is just the correct use of words and sentences. If you put too much emphasis on grammar and even think about grammar in daily speech, you will definitely not speak a foreign language well.
N1 in 2 years -- a new starting point and a new journey
During the period of school, Hu Haifei actively participated in college, school and provincial and municipal level competitions, and achieved outstanding results. In the Shijiazhuang Japanese Speech Contest, he only learned Japanese for one year. His idiomatic pronunciation and fluent oral expression were highly recognized by the Chinese and Japanese judges, and he won the special award.
None of this is in the bag. Hu Haifei said: "In the process of learning Japanese, you must be willing to endure hardship. Language accumulation is a long process, in which the most important thing is to find a suitable learning method. As long as you can make use of your spare time and devote yourself to learning, this is a suitable learning method for you. The more you master the language characteristics of different environments and cultures, the more you will be able to improve your language ability." Many classmates think he is the "great master" of Japanese, but he has won N1, but he modestly said: "Now I have got the honor of Japanese N1 which I have been longing for, but I am more aware that my Japanese level is far from natural and comprehensive, and the real Japanese learning has just begun. I will go further and further towards my ideal Japanese language ability."
"When the goal is determined, focus, persist and conquer", which is the indelible brand engraved on every student of Hebei Foreign Studies University .
